Countries
Wheelchair fencing has grown from one country competing at the International Stoke Mandeville Games in 1954, to 14 winning at least one medal each at the Rio 2016 Paralympics and many more sending athletes.
On a national level, the sport is managed by fencing or sport federations and National Paralympic Committees. These organisation are responsible for recruiting and developing athletes, preparing them for the different level of competitions that take place around the world.
Countries can participate in competitions sanctioned by IWAS Wheelchair Fencing,
through membership of IWAS.
IWAS Wheelchair Fencing countries are members that have sent at least one fencer to an official and sanctioned IWAS Wheelchair Fencing competition in the last two fencing seasons (including the current season).
Therefore, these members are permitted to send delegates to the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Sport Assembly, nominate candidates, put forward motions and vote in elections and for motions. All other IWAS members are allowed to take part as non-voting observers at the Sport Assembly.
