Great opportunities for Wheelchair Fencers in Russia

Report from the VII Championship of Wheelchair Fencing Russia and III Championship for their cadets.

IWAS was pleased to receive from the Wheelchair Fencing Federation of Russia a report following their VII Championship of Russia that took place in Moscow from the 7th April until 12th April. The tournament which included 78 athletes from 11 regions of Russia competed in epee, foil and sabre.

On the 10th April the competition included an event for Junior Wheelchair Fencers from the age of 13 to 17, which offered the younger athletes the opportunity to compete amongst their senior sport peers.Which was the III Championship for Russia Cadets.

The event also provided the opportunity for the National Team doctor Mr. Ivan Penkin to carry out seminars, firstly in the subject of medical classification with certificates for the doctors attending from the various regions and a further seminar together with the National Anti-Doping Organisation RUSADA representative regarding the latest anti-doping issues.

During the Championship a Refereeing Seminar was held by the international referees Mr. Khusein Ismailov and Mrs. Kseniya Ovsyannikova.

Overall the tournament provided an exciting and rewarding event for the sport and athletes of Wheelchair Fencing in Russia, in what is an important stage of preparation for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
