Sarrebourg added as Satellite competition to IWAS Wheelchair Fencing calendar
23/04/2018
The internationally renowned Sarrebourg epee and sabre competition is to host the next IWAS Wheelchair Fencing satellite competition.
IWAS Wheelchair Fencing has revealed the latest satellite competition to join its 2018 calendar.
A sabre event in Sarrebourg, France, will take place on 25 May and will be followed by the Challenge International for epee and sabre on 26-27 May.
The IWAS Wheelchair Fencing satellite competition calendar is a new layer in the sport’s pathway. Introduced to encourage new fencers and those just starting out on their international careers, Sarrebourg will be the third such event.
The first satellite competition took place in Kyoto, Japan, last year and attracted more than 20 athletes from five Asian countries. This was followed by Antibes, France, in April.
The idea behind the satellite competitions is for developing athletes to gain experience of international events and try out their skiils in a friendly atmosphere, before moving on to the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Cup circuit.
In Sarrebourg national classification will be provided by the organisers on 25 May, ahead of the start of competition at the Centre Sportif Pierre de Coubertin. This is availabe to any new wheelchair fencers.
