Khetsuriani claims second gold at Pisa World Cup

Adding to her win from the sabre on Thursday (22 September), Khetsuriani nevertheless faced a tough challenge from the USA’s Ellen Geddes in the final.

Having won her first World Cup medal earlier on the season, Geddes was out to impress once again.

However it was not to be for the American as Khetsurini showed why she remains one of the top fencers after nearly a decade in the sport.

Geddes will however be buoyed, especially with the recent announcement that the USA will host a World Cup in Washington DC in January.

France’s Stephanie Droit Malarme stepped onto her first World Cup podium since 2016 with bronze. Hong Kong’s Nga Ting Tong joined her in third.

The women’s foil category A delivered Italy’s best result of the day although it may not have been the outcome the hosts were hoping for.

Andreea Mogos took bronze for the hosts, while two Hungarians battled it out for the gold.

Multiple Paralympic medallist Zsuzsanna Krajnyak put up a tough fight against European title-holder and Worlds silver medallist Eva Andreja Hajmasi, finally emerging the victor.

Pisa 2022 is Krajnyak’s first outing of the year but her win is the latest in a long line of golds.

Georgia’s Nina Tibilashvili also took home bronze, adding a second to her collection after her efforts in the sabre on Thursday.

Ukraine’s Andri Demchuk won his first World Cup gold of 2022 in the men’s sabre category A – the perfect preparation for the upcoming defence of his European title.

Demchuk overcame Great Britain’s Piers Gilliver in the final. Gilliver, an epee specialist, has reached some great results of his own in sabre this season.

It was also Gilliver’s second medal of the competition, having claimed victory in the epee on Thursday.

Hungary’s Richard Osvath and Germany’s Maurice Schmidt took bronze. Not to be outdone, the third place was also Schmidt’s second podium of Pisa 2022 to follow on from his epee silver 24 hours before.

European champion and World Championships bronze medallist, Adrian Castro, triumphed in all-Polish final in the men’s sabre category B.

Castro faced teammate Michal Dabrowski who was flying high after winning silver in the epee yesterday. In the end the clash saw Castro ease past Dabrowski 15-7.

Ukraine’s Anton Datsko secured bronze on his first outing in the sabre since his last World Cup medal in 2018. Hungarian Istvan Tarjanyi also occupied third place.

The Pisa 2022 IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Cup continues on Saturday with the conclusion of the individual events. The men’s foil category A and B and women’s epee category A and B are all on the schedule. Sunday (25 September) will feature the men’s and women’s team foil and the mixed sabre – a new event for 2022.
