Hungary’s Anna Nadasdy and Great Britain’s Josh Waddell claimed their second junior titles at the 2024 Wheelchair Fencing Under 23s World Championships in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on Tuesday (23 April).

Nadasdy’s win was especially notable as she beat defending champion Hyo Kyeong Kwon of South Korea with an unbelievable score of 15-2.

Kwon has also topped the podium at World Cup events, making Nadasdy’s win even more impressive.

Thailand’s Aphinya Thongdaeng reached a 100 per cent medal winning record for the competition, claiming her third in as many days with bronze. Kwon’s teammate, Yejin Jo, also grabbed third place – her second of the competition.

There was another dramatic conclusion to the men’s events as South Korea’s Phoopa Sae-Sim and Great Britain’s Josh Waddell faced each other.

Waddell was forced to dig deep with barely anything to separate the pair. He had managed a two point buffer with the score at 13-11 but Sae-Sim also showed he could pull on his reserves to bring the score back level.

Waddell took the lead once more but again his opponent equalled the score. Both fencers were clearly in it to win it but it was Waddell who had the edge, letting out three huge shouts after being awarded the final point.

Pabitra Sahu of India and Hong Kong, China’s Sean Glass were the bronze medallists. Sahu and Glass leave Thailand with two medals each.
