Day one of the IWAS U17/U23 Wheelchair Fencing World Championships, Stadskanaal (NED).

8th September 2016

The Championships welcomed thirty young fencers from ten countries for the U17 competition and nine for the U23s, the highest number of fencers at a junior World Championships. The young competitors will be demonstrating their skills in foil, epee and sabre over four days of competition.

Udo Ziegler, Secretary General of IWAS Wheelchair Fencing, opened the competition, commenting that the number of fencers present showed the sport to be "actively growing" with upcoming talent from the three continents present and that the competition hosted  "future champions in the making".

The competition kicked off with the under 17 mixed foil competition with 15 competitors, for some the competition served as their first majorinternational competition experience.

After some very exciting fencing the final was between the newcomer Oleg Gavrilenkov (RUS) and the more experienced Emanuele Lambertini (ITA). Lambertini gave a strong performance taking the lead. Gavrilenko demonstrated some spirited fencing but unfortunately the points difference proved too great to pull back from the more experienced fencer and finished in silver medal position. Gavrilenko took the gold medal position with a score of 15-7

Final medal positions:

Gold: Emanuele Lambertini (ITA)

Silver: Oleg Gavrilenkov (RUS)

Bronze: Nikita Trfimov (RUS)

Bronze: Alena Evdokimova (RUS)
