Women’s Sabre makes the ‘cut’ and ‘Epee’ days for the Men…
Day three of competition in the IWAS World Wheelchair Fencing Championships from Catania, saw the Men’s Cat A, B and C Epee competitions and the Women’s Sabre events take centre stage at the City of Catania Ice Palace.
After a frenetic poule round with some of the top seeds struggling to find form, the direct elimination rounds got under way. The Men’s Cat A Epee went with form with world ranked #1 Dariusz Pender of Poland taking the World Champion title. In the Women’s Sabre world ranked number 13 Zou from China took top spot in an impressive display against home favourite Trigilia of Italy.
In the Men’s Cat C Epee, William Russo of Italy joined in with his non-disabled Italian Team mates in taking a World Championship title to the delight of the home crowd and an emotional medal ceremony and anthem presentation.
Team events to come here in Catania and we look forward to lots more exciting events.
“We are very proud to be at the forefront of working to ensure that Fencing is unified and completely integrated for both disabled and non-disabled fencers. It is vitally important that to enable us to achieve this integration that the National Federations follow the pathway that the F.I.S has taken in making social and technical inclusion between the Olympic and Paralympic teams, and to ensure that the media show equality in their coverage and reporting of fencing. We hope that the next World Championships will continue this vision we share with IWAS and we look forward to working on similar projects in the future.” Giorgio Scarso, President, Italian Fencing Federation (Federazione Italiana Scherma F.I.S)
