Ukraine take men’s sabre world title

The defending champions were in great form once again, leading through all but one of their bouts against 2019 bronze medallists Russia, competing as RPC.

The respective category A and B Paralympic champions Andrii Demchuk and Anton Datsko joined forces with Artem Manko to stretch ahead of the RPC team of Roman Fedyaev, Maxim Shaburov and Aleksandr Kurzin, with Demchuk landing the deciding blow against Shaburov.

Despite missing out to Ukraine in the semi-final, Greece beat Italy to take the final podium place. The trio of Rio 2016 individual category B silver medallist Panagiotis Triantafyllou, Gerasimos Pylarinos-Markantonatos and Vasileios Ntounis just edged their Italian opponents by three hits.

The competition will conclude tomorrow with the women’s team sabre.

As well as the team sabre World Championships, men’s and women’s category C world titles are also on offer in Warsaw.

Ukraine enjoyed more success courtesy of Serhii Shavkun who retained his epee title in the men’s category C, grabbing his third consecutive World Championships gold in the weapon.

Shavkun faced RPC’s Alexander Logutenko in the final, easing past him 15-7.

Logutenko will however be pleased with his performance on Monday. The Russian overcame 2019 bronze medallist Dmitrijs Valainis on his way to the final to win his first epee medal at this level since 2015.

Logutenko’s teammate Dmitry Belyaev picked up his fourth World Championships medal with bronze, maintaining his 100 per cent podium record. Valainis claimed the other bronze on offer.

Italy’s Nora Consuelo clamed gold in the unofficial women’s epee category C after a clash with Poland’s debutant Izabela Solpalska Rybak. Georgia’s Diana Jishiashvili was third.

The 2021 IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Category C and Team Sabre World Championships conclude on Tuesday (6 July). Live results can be found here as well as live coverage on the IWAS YouTube channel.
