Wheelchair Fencing Day 5 Round Up
Day 5 at the Wheelchair Fencing sees the Team Foil competition for men take to the stage. Team GB getting a tough draw in the first round facing top ranked Hong Kong, and European champions Hungary, having the unenviable task of taking on the People’s Republic of China. The higher ranked teams lived up to their reputation and sailed through to the semi-finals, however France upset the apple cart by beating Hong Kong 45-41 in a close fought match to book their place in the final against China. Team GB ended their games with a creditable performance, especially from Paralympic veteran David Heaton, competing in his 5th games, taking on Hungary for the 7th/8th place playoff in which they were outclassed by the Hungarians 45-12. Hong Kong claimed another medal beating Italy in the bronze medal match. China continued their fencing dominance taking Gold over France despite a late comeback, 45-32.
Once again the spectators were amazing and filled the fencing hall with noise and energy. Every point was cheered and the athletes were warmly welcomed and supported. This was without a doubt the greatest ever games and it was such an experience to be part of it.
So the Paralympic Wheelchair Fencing comes to an end after 5 days of intense competition, and the athletes and officials can finally relax. After 4 years of preparation and qualification there are winners and losers, but the one thing that is definite it that all gave their personal best and provided some amazing fencing for the many spectators that attended. Some athletes will be getting ready for the closing ceremony, some will perhaps be considering retirement, some may even have a well-earned drink, but I think most will be planning and preparing for the next 4 years and contemplating booking a place in Rio.
