Wheelchair fencing regional Championships moved
06/04/2021
The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Wheelchair Fencing has announced that its Asian, European and Americas Championships will be pushed back to December 2021.
All three competitions were originally due to be qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. However in March, due to ongoing uncertainty around international travel and to offer some stability for teams, the sport announced the closure of the qualification window for the Paralympics.
This gave organisers some flexibility for when they could host the events, allowing them the chance to maximise participation and ensure they go ahead this year. In partnership with the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Executive Committee, the decision was therefore made to postpone all three competitions.
As a result Thailand and Brazil still plan to host the Asian and Americas Championships later in 2021 and the European Championships will take place in Warsaw, Poland.
The World Cup scheduled for Sao Paulo, Brazil, in May has been cancelled.
A World Cup in Warsaw will still go ahead from 8-11 July and will be the last major event ahead of the Paralympics. In addition, the 2021 IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Category C and Sabre Team World Championships will take place in the Polish capital from 3-6 July.
After Tokyo 2020, fencers will head to Pisa, Italy, for a World Cup from 18-21 November shortly before the regional Championships round-off the year. Dates and exact locations will be announced shortly.
